Nintendo repareert scheuren in Nintendo DS Lite gratis

Elk nieuw apparaat heeft wat kinderziektes bij z’n release, en zo ook de Nintendo DS Lite. Toen de handheld hier in Europa nog niet in de winkels lag waaiden er al klachten vanuit de Verenigde Staten dat er een aantal units dezelfde klacht vertoonden. Er was namelijk sprake van een scheur in het linker scharnier van het bovenste scherm, waardoor deze scheef op de rest van de handheld zat. Toen ook bleek dat deze gebreken zich voordeden in Europa, vroegen verschillende websites bij Nintendo om opheldering.

Uit een officiele verklaring van Nintendo bleek later dat het slechts om 0,02% procent van alle handhelds ging, dus om tientallen apparaten, en geen honderden of duizenden, zoals eerder beweerd werd. Daarnaast geeft het bedrijf aan dat wanneer de klant vindt dat het euvel onder de garantie valt, Nintendo de DS Lite gratis zal repareren.

“In the U.S., the reported number of small cosmetic cracks in the plastic hinge of DS Lite systems represents less than 0.02 percent of the total units sold. This cosmetic issue in no way impacts the gameplay or integrity of the DS Lite. Nintendo stands behind the quality of our products and encourages DS Lite owners to contact our Customer Service Department if they are not happy with the functionality of their systems.”

By contrast, when the Xbox 360 was released in November 2005, Microsoft reported that approximately 3 percent of its units were experiencing problems. The company also claimed that the figure was less than the average rate for newly released electronic gadgets. Sony has also had problems with defects: Many PlayStation Portable screens suffered from dead pixels, and the company quietly staged a free PlayStation 2 repair program for PlayStation 2s plagued by the dreaded “disc read error.”

En de verklaring dat de scheurende scharnieren onder de garantie vallen, volgens Eurogamer:

“The DS Lite carries a one year warranty for manufacturing defects. If the fault is covered under the warranty it will be repaired free of charge; if not, then customer services will provide a cost for repairing the product.”
