Nokia’s N-Gage is de laatste tijd het doelwit van hackers die proberen (en met succes) de kopieerbeveiliging te verwijderen. Vanzelfsprekend zijn onze Finnen daar niet blij mij en volgens eigen zeggen is de jacht op deze hackers geopend. De opsporing van deze hackers zou gaan met een samenwerking de politie en Internet service providers. Met deze providers wil Nokia proberen de site’s te doen verdwijnen die illegale crack software de lucht in sturen.
How the copy protection mechanism was cracked isn’t known. The Nokia spokesman said the company’s system was proprietary, but presumably documentation and tools exist to allow game developers to create the encrypted content files they will transfer to game cards.
Skill is one thing, but as far as time goes, it has taken only a month from the console’s release to the public for the code to be cracked. The Nokia spokesman admitted that the company had “expected this to happen” – which begs the question why, like the DVD Content Scrambling System, the copy protection developers didn’t come up with something stronger in the first place.
Al met al lijkt het een beetje een verloren strijd om hiervoor nou zoveel moeite te doen. Vanwege de privacywet mogen de gegevens vaak niet gegeven worden en áls het al lukt om ze te pakken, ben ik erg benieuwd wat hun straf zou zijn. Billenkoek?
