Het is nog niet helemaal duidelijk wat de impact precies gaat zijn van het coronavirus op de game-industrie. Natuurlijk zijn er al kleine vertragingen geweest voor bijvoorbeeld The Last of Us 2 en Iron Man VR, maar volgens de baas van Xbox, Phil Spencer, zijn het vooral de games die in 2021 en later gaan verschijnen in gevaar. Games die in de zomer en de herfst moeten verschijnen zullen het minder zwaar hebben (via VG247):
“Through the summer, early fall? I feel pretty good about those games. Games that were targeting a year from now or beyond? There’ll be some impact, but they’ll be able to react.”
Dit heeft vooral te maken met de manier waarop games worden gemaakt en het feit dat er vooral in het begin van de productie veel menselijk contact nodig is. Als voorbeeld wordt het motion capture-werk genoemd, waarbij geacteerd moet worden. Ook het gebruik van orkesten is lastig.
“Mocap is just something that’s basically stopped. We’re not going into mocap studios. If you had all your animation captured and you’re doing touch up in more individual art production and in areas like textures and other things, you’re in a better position. If you’re waiting for a lot of either large audio work — when it’s with symphonies and other things — or mocap, you’re held up right now and you’re making progress in areas that you are.”
Toch spreekt hij wel de hoop uit dat studio’s zich aan weten te passen aan de nieuwe situatie:
“I’m pretty confident in the industry’s ability to continue a steady flow of games coming out. There’s just a lot of games in production across the industry right now, and I think we’re going to be – as an industry – we’re going to be fine. I’m bullish on what this means in the long run for games, even if there’s a certain impact to a certain launch window for certain titles that we might see.”
Eerder heeft een partij als CD Projekt Red al aangegeven dat Cyberpunk 2077 gewoon dit jaar zal verschijnen. De vraag is dus wat de impact zal zijn op de langere termijn.

Ik vrees dat Phil een nieuwe smoes heeft gevonden voor toekomstig gebrek aan first party games.
