Jill Murray, director of narrative design (lees: verhaalschrijver) bij Ubisoft Quebec, heeft het niet zo op mannelijke protagonisten. Murray liet in een interview weten dat zij het liefst “sappige en echte” vrouwen in de hoofdrol van een videogame ziet. En we kunnen haar enkel gelijk geven: wie houdt er nu niet van sappige vrouwen?
Murray schreef in het verleden het verhaal van Assassin’s Creed III: Liberation, een game die – niet geheel ontoevallig – ook een vrouwelijke protagoniste kent. In een interview haalt Murray Mass Effect, Gone Home en The Last of Us aan als voorbeelden van verhaaltechnisch uitstekende games met een vrouw in de hoofdrol:
Trying to feature positive female characters’ is probably a mistake. When you demand that characters be paragons of positivity, that’s when you get the feeling of “trying” and no one likes to play “trying.” Players want to connect with characters that offer something juicy and real. I’m less interested in the “kick-ass woman who can do it all,” than I am in the people whose flaws, interests, fears, and passions drive and pull them in conflicting directions. The messy stuff is what makes real people relatable and memorable, whether or not they’re good role models.Dit soort personages bestaan niet enkel in fictieve games; ook in het echte leven komen ze voor. Murray noemt enkele indrukwekkende voorbeelden:
For example, “Guevara” the English teacher who became a sniper in Syria after her children were killed in an air strike, or “Janice,” the con artist from my old neighborhood, who uses her puggle as an accessory to her petty crimes– I will never forget these women.
