Het meermaals door uitstel geplaagde Shenmue 3 ligt nog maar amper in de winkelrekken of de bedenker van de serie – Yu Suzuki – heeft al te kennen gegeven ooit een vierde deel te willen uitbrengen. Via een in-game boodschap in de laatste iteratie uit Suzuki zijn wens om het verhaal van Ryo en zijn avonturen voort te zetten in Shenmue 4.
Het is natuurlijk nog maar de vraag of Shenmue 4 daadwerkelijk geproduceerd gaat worden, iets wat volgens Suzuki ook deels afhankelijk is van de verkoopcijfers die het langverwachte derde deel gaat produceren. Daarnaast is het volgens hem ook voornaam dat men de juiste partners daarvoor aan boord weet te krijgen. Maar als het aan de game director zelf ligt, komt Shenmue 4 eraan, al weten we inmiddels ook dat dit 18 jaar kan duren.
To all the fans who have waited many years for Shenmue 3, and to all of the crowdfunding backers who have made this game possible: This project would not exist without your love, support, and the connections we’ve made along the way. With profound appreciation for all that you have done, I am happy to finally present to you Shenmue 3.
During development I expanded the scope beyond what I had originally envisioned. I’m happy we were able to include the distinct “Shenmue” charm throughout the game. I hope that this new chapter strikes even a small resonance in your heart.
For as long as there are those who wish to see Shenmue live on, I will never give up on my own personal journey to complete its story. As with Shenmue 3, the Shenmue story is with you.
I sincerely hope that, together, we can continue to spin the tale of Ryo and his adventures in Shenmue 4.

Shenmue 3, welke door een uiterst succesvolle Kickstarter-campagne tot stand is gekomen, is inmiddels wereldwijd verkrijgbaar. Het vorige deel (Shenmue 2) stamt inmiddels alweer uit 2001 en kwam destijds op de Dreamcast uit. Laten we voor de fans van de franchise hopen dat we in ieder geval niet tot 2037 op Shenmue 4 hoeven te wachten.
