Na Detective Pikachu maakt ook Sonic The Hedgehog de overstap naar het witte doek. De live action Sonic-film moet eind 2019 verschijnen en de eerste poster is zojuist opgedoken. IGN heeft de scoop.

Op de poster zien we een met blauwe vacht bedekte (toch wel erg harige) Sonic. De verhoudingen, op zijn grote hoofd na, ogen nogal menselijk; ook lijkt hij toch wel erg veel spiermassa met zich mee te dragen.
Het productieteam van de Sonic the Hedgehog-film besloot een realistischer Sonic te maken dan de veelal cartooneske iteraties waar we aan gewend zijn geraakt. Als doel stelden de makers zich Ted, de CG-teddybeer die past in de echte wereld.
Tim Miller, executive producer van de film en director van Deadpool, gaf aan dat het een bewuste keuze was om Sonic er anders uit te laten zien. Over de keuze om hem vacht te geven, zei hij het volgende:
“That was always Stage 1 of adapting it to what the real world is and what a real animal would be like. It would be weird and it would feel like he was running around nude if he was some sort of otter-like thing. It was always, for us, fur, and we never considered anything different. It’s part of what integrates him into the real world and makes him a real creature.”
De grootste uitdaging, zo vertelt Miller, was om Sonic’s ogen goed over te laten komen. Sonic lijkt vaak slechts één oog te bezitten, maar het productieteam vond dat niet passen bij de film-versie van Sonic The Hedgehog.
“I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’ But everything is a discussion, and that’s kind of the goal, which is to only change what’s necessary and stay true to the rest of it. He’s not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don’t think that’s the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.”
In de film belandt Sonic, met de stem van Ben Schwartz, in onze hedendaagse wereld, alwaar hij moet leren om te gaan met een voor hem nieuwe omgeving. Uiteraard zou Sonic geen Sonic zijn als hij het niet ook moet opnemen tegen Dr. Robotnik, in de film gespeeld door Jim Carrey.
Sonic The Hedgehog moet eind 2019 verschijnen. De Verenigde Staten zal de film 8 november in de bioscoop vinden, Australië krijgt hem 28 november en Europa moet tot 26 december wachten.
