Augmented Reality (AR) games zijn nog altijd heel populair. The Walking Dead: Our World en Jurassic World: Alive doen het heel netjes. Toch komt geen van die games in de buurt van het succes van Pokémon GO. Onlangs werd al duidelijk dat de mobiele game inmiddels al 1,8 miljard dollar heeft opgebracht. Spelers lijken Pokémon GO twee jaar na de release nog steeds – of opnieuw – volledig te omarmen.
Volgens onderzoek van Apptopia is simpelweg het uitbrengen van een AR-game niet genoeg. Pokémon GO zag in de eerste week een gigantisch aantal van 30 miljoen downloads. The Walking Dead moest het met 1 miljoen downloads doen en Jurassic World kwam tot 912 duizend downloads. Apptopia laat weten dat het succes van dergelijke AR-games ook afhangt van de mate waarin de game aansluit bij de beleving van de tv-serie of film:
