Gears of War 4 krijgt filter voor gore en grof taalgebruik

Rod Fergusson, studiobaas van Gears of War 4-ontwikkelaar The Coalition, heeft bevestigd dat de nieuwe game een optie krijgt om gore en grof taalgebruik te filteren. Dit was bij voorgaande Gears-games ook al het geval, maar het heeft het ontwikkelteam toch voor een flinke uitdaging gesteld.

In een recent interview vertelde Fergusson dat het lastig is om te bepalen welke vloekwoorden eruit moeten, aangezien er niet echt een standaard bestaat voor videogames wat nog door de beugel kan en wat echt te grof is. Fergusson vertelde:

Gore is important for obvious reasons and swearing too. I think the tricky part for us is, and it’s been one of the funny things about the mature language flag, is that there’s no standard, so we’ve had to set the bar.

There’s no George Carlin seven words or whatever and there’s no radio standard that changes or that we can look to and say ‘Hey, from a video game perspective how do we go from whatever mature language to non-mature language.’ There is no standard, so we’ve had to make the call.

Generally what we tend to do is take the hardest of the hard off because we just didn’t want to over-bleepify our game. I tend to look at radio and go a little bit further than that, so generally anything around the word f**k tends to stay turned off. I tend to keep the s**ts. I tend to keep the b**ch, I tend to keep the goddammits just because it speaks to the characters and the thing they’re in. We just sort of focus on the hardest of the hard. So when you turn the mature language off, you’re basically not going to hear the word f**k anymore.

Mocht je dus de filter-optie overwegen, dan hoef je niet bang te zijn dat elke dialoog vol met piepjes zit om grof taalgebruik eruit te halen.

Voor een eerste ervaring met Gears of War 4 kan je vanaf 18 april aan de slag met de Xbox One beta. Om vroege toegang te krijgen tot de beta dien je de Gears of War Ultimate Edition voor 11 april gespeeld te hebben. Het is echter onbekend hoe snel Microsoft de codes zal verspreiden om gamers toegang te geven tot de Gears of War 4 beta. Vanaf 24 april is de speciale ‘early access’ voorbij en kunnen alle Xbox Live Gold-leden de beta spelen tot 1 mei.
