Hoewel de Call of Duty-serie al jaren te kampen heeft met afnemende verkoopcijfers, weet de franchise Activisions bankrekening nog steeds flink te spekken. Uit cijfers van NPD blijkt namelijk dat Black Ops 3 de bestverkochte game van 2015 was. Indrukwekkend, zeker aangezien het spel pas sinds november verkrijgbaar is.
Ook tijdens de feestdagen was Black Ops 3 de steevaste publieksfavoriet. Sowieso was december een goede maand voor de game-industrie: binnen 30 dagen genereerden videospelletjes maar liefst 3,22 miljard aan omzet. NPD vertelt:
December 2015 was the best month on record for PS4 and Xbox One, and the second-best for the Wii U in terms of new physical software unit sales. This also meant that it was the best month of total eighth generation new physical software sales.Bij deze cijfers worden de digitale verkopen nog niet eens meegerekend. Als je bedenkt dat Sony eerder liet weten dat december de beste maand voor de PlayStation Store ooit was, zul je begrijpen dat er dus nog flink wat dollars bijkomen.
De PlayStation 4 was in 2015 de bestverkochte console. Dat is verrassend, aangezien Amerika traditioneel een Xbox-land is. NPD vertelt:
After 26 months of sales, the combined cumulative sales of Xbox One and PS4 exceeds the 26 month total of the PS3 and Xbox 360 by 47 percent. The lead from the prior generation has expanded due to the strong PS4 and Xbox One 2015 holiday, going from 38 percent by the end of October, growing to 47 percent by the end of November, and maintaining 47 percent higher sales by the end of December.Gelukkig was het niet alleen maar kommer en kwel voor Microsoft: zowel Star Wars: Battlefront als Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 verkochten beter op de Xbox One dan op de PlayStation 4. Het lijkt er vooralsnog dus niet op dat Sony’s exclusiviteitsdeal met Call of Duty zijn vruchten afwerpt.
