Rovio, de ontwikkelaar van Angry Birds 1 en 2, heeft bekendgemaakt dat het minstens 260 mensen zal ontslaan. Ondanks de vele downloads van de games, blijkt het niet zo goed te gaan en moet het bedrijf reorganiseren en zijn plannen flink herzien.
Chief executor Pekka Rantala liet weten dat Rovio door zijn groei te veel verschillende dingen wilde doen en zich nu beter moet centreren op het zakelijke gedeelte. Dit is niet de eerste ontslaggolf; in 2014 werden er ook al 110 mensen de deur uit gewerkt. Rantala vertelt:
Rovio’s growth and eagerness to explore new business opportunities over the past few years has been exceptional. As a result, we did too many things. In our current financial condition we must now put focus on where we are at our best: In creating magnificent gaming experiences, in producing an amazing animation movie, and in delighting our fans with great products.Rovio moet dus een slanker bedrijf worden om weer te groeien. In 2014 liet Rovio weten dat de winst met 50 procent gezakt is, wat leidde tot het opstappen van Mikael Hed, de toenmalige CEO. Het volgende grote project is de Angry Birds-animatiefilm, die in 2016 verschijnt.While we have gathered good momentum this year, especially with the launch of the Angry Birds 2 game, fundamental changes are needed to ensure Rovio succeeds in its global ambitions to be the leading entertainment company with mobile games at its heart.
This personally is a difficult decision. However it is certain that a leaner and more agile Rovio is absolutely necessary to move forward and take the company to new successes in the future. We will work with and support all our employees through this period of change.
