Hoewel Mafia 3 en Grand Theft Auto 5 beiden games met een open spelwereld zijn, zijn ze totaal niet te vergelijken. Op de vraag of Mafia 3 eenzelfde ‘open wereld-ervaring’ als die van Rockstar zal zijn, liet Take-Two-directeur Strauss Zelnick weten:
Mafia III is a completely different experience. I wouldn’t compare it to anything else out there. The reveal last week at Gamescom was great, but it stands alone. We don’t use any other game in the same sentence as Grand Theft Auto, It is the industry’s standard-bearer. It’s not up for comparison.In hetzelfde interview liet Zelnick weten dat Rockstar Games en 2K Games ook niet dezelfde techniek delen:
We’re blessed that we have two distinct labels at this company. We do not have a tech-sharing environment. We’re a very congenial company, but we don’t think that’s the best way to get the best out of our development folks. It’s not the way it works around here.Het is ook bekend dat Mafia 3 in Take-Two’s fiscale jaar van 2017 zal uitkomen. Dit houdt in dat we in elk geval tot na april 2016 moeten wachten om onze criminele bendes op te richten.
