Na de prachtige stop-motion animatiefilms Coraline, ParaNorman en eerder dit jaar The Boxtrolls, gaat Laika nu samenwerken met Focus Features. Er is namelijk bekend geworden dat de twee bedrijven samen een avonturenfilm gaan maken, die zich zal afspelen in het mythische Japan en de naam Kubo and the Two Strings krijgt. Het verhaal zal geschreven worden door de mensen achter ParaNorman en de regie is in handen van Laika-president Travis Knight.
De officiële synopsis luidt als volgt:
“In the epic fantasy, scruffy, kindhearted Kubo ekes out a humble living while devotedly caring for his mother in their sleepy shoreside village. It is a quiet existence – until a spirit from the past catches up with him to enforce an age-old vendetta. Suddenly on the run from gods and monsters, Kubo’s chance for survival rests on finding the magical suit of armor once worn by his fallen father, the greatest samurai the world has ever known. Summoning courage, Kubo embarks on a thrilling odyssey as he faces his family’s history, navigates the elements, and bravely fights for the earth and the stars.”De stemmencast zal bestaan uit Art Parkinson (Game of Thrones) als de stem van Kubo, maar ook Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron, Rooney Mara, Ralph Fiennes en Brenda Vaccaro zullen in de film te horen zijn. Hieronder is de eerste concept-art te zien met daarop hoofdpersonage Kubo.
Het was al bekend dat Laika en Focus Features een afspraak hadden gemaakt om samen drie films te gaan maken en deze film zal dan ook als eerste gaan uitkomen en wel op 19 augustus 2016.
