Het is alweer heel wat jaren geleden dat gamers volledig uit hun dak gingen met muziekgames zoals Guitar Hero en Rock Band. Grondlegger van de opleving was toch wel ontwikkelaar Harmonix, die ons de eerste (succesvolle) Guitar Hero-games en later Rock Band bracht. Het tempo van nieuwe muziekgames lag echter zo hoog, dat velen er wel op uitgekeken raakten. En zo leek het genre weer een snelle dood te sterven…
In een recent gesprek op Reddit liet Alex Rigopulos, algemeen directeur van Harmonix, wat meer los over de status van het genre muzikale games. Rigopulos erkent dat vooral de vele releases van Guitar Hero-games ervoor hebben gezorgd dat mensen het genre beu werden. Het is volgens hem echter niet alleen de schuld van uitgever Activision:
I think there’s probably some truth to the notion that Activision ‘over-published’ Guitar Hero. But I wouldn’t agree that the decline of the genre was ‘entirely the fault of Activision’.“The next outing”? Zou dat kunnen wijzen op een nieuwe Rock Band? Als het aan Rigopulos ligt wel. Na het succes van de muziekgames was het tijd voor dansgames. Nu is het weer tijd voor wat nieuws:Reality is always more complicated than this. For example, it didn’t help that GH and RB were the most expensive video games on the market during a brutal recession. I also don’t think that either GH or RB delivered enough (or the right kind of) evolution of the experience in the years that followed the initial releases – something we hope to address at some point in the next outing.
Of course I was sad when Rock Band passed its (first!) peak, but one way or another, it will be back. Music games need to evolve just like every aspect of pop culture. The band game boom was followed by a dance game boom, which will be followed by some other manifestation of music games -hopefully some of the new stuff Harmonix is working on.Zit jij te wachten op een nieuwe Rock Band?
