We zijn langzamerhand wel gewend dat bij het verfilmen van boekenseries vaak wordt besloten om het laatste boek in twee delen uit te brengen. Na onder andere Harry Potter, Twilight en The Hunger Games volgt ook Divergent deze trend. Het laatste boek, Allegiant, wordt dus in twee delen verfilmd.
Lionsgate heeft meteen de release data voor de Verenigde Staten bekendgemaakt. Allegiant Part 1 draait daar vanaf 18 maart 2016 en Part 2 vanaf 24 maart 2017. Overigens worden de films ook apart geproduceerd, terwijl dit bijvoorbeeld bij The Hunger Games niet het geval is.
Vlak na de bekendmaking werd door Lionsgate al snel ontkend dat de beslissing om het boek in twee delen te verfilmen om geld zou hebben gedraaid. Volgens de filmstudio ging het om het vele materiaal dat het laatste boek te bieden heeft. Deze strategie zou erg goed werken:
