Ubisoft: Rainbow 6: Patriots werkte niet en moest opnieuw ontwikkeld worden

Sinds de onthulling van Rainbow Six: Patriots in 2011, is het angstvallig stil geweest rondom de game. Meermaals ging het gerucht dat Patriots gecanceld zou zijn, maar Ubisoft bleef volhouden dat het spel nog steeds in in ontwikkeling is. Gisteren heeft de Franse uitgever in een interview verklaard waarom we zo lang moeten wachten op de game: hij wordt momenteel compleet opnieuw ontwikkeld.

Laurent Detoc, baas van Ubisoft Noord-Amerika, liet weten dat Rainbow 6: Patriots in zijn oorspronkelijke vorm “niet werkte”:

We had a core team. They had a good vision. They got started, and then the game wasn’t working. So [they had] to start again. There’s an editorial group in Ubisoft, a big group, very influential. If the game is not good enough, they say it’s not good enough. Most of the time, the team will say, ‘yeah, I know.’ But sometimes they want to continue in a direction where you say, ‘no, it’s not going to work.’

Detoc vertelde dat het spel nu op de next-gen consoles zal verschijnen, wat een scala aan nieuwe mogelijkheden geeft voor de ontwikkelaars. Hij sluit dan ook niet uit dat Patriots een totaal andere game zal worden dan oorspronkelijk is aangekondigd:

Rainbow had to be remade. Now they’re going to have the benefit of the new consoles, if and when it comes out. It’s one of those examples where you try, it doesn’t work, you try again. If it doesn’t work, we’re not going to bring it to you. […] Could it be shooter with another name in the end, because the team doesn’t want to do counter-terrorist guys? Say they want to be in a mercenary setting? That’s possible.

Eén ding is dus duidelijk: we hoeven Patriots voorlopig nog niet te verwachten. Misschien komt Ubisoft met een heronthulling op de E3?
