CD Projekt: Cyberpunk 2077 wordt geen donkere wereld zoals Blade Runner

Ontwikkelaar CD Projekt Red heeft zojuist in een interview de angsten van een groep gamers weggenomen. Zij waren bang dat Cyberpunk 2077 een duistere en hopeloze Blade Runner-achtige wereld zou worden, net als het bordspel waarop de titel gebaseerd is. Game director Mateusz Kanik gaf echter aan dat een dergelijke wereld Cyberpunk 2077 “supersaai” zou maken.

Volgens Kanik werkt een systeem dat is gebaseerd op het rollen met een dobbelsteen niet in een actie RPG vol explosies:

The main problem is that the original system is based on dice rolls. When you think about Cyberpunk you think about shooting, action, a lot of explosions. But that doesn’t fit dice rolls in a video game. We want to make it more action-like – there will be a system that lets you use active skills actually in the gameplay in a shooting sequence or something like that, rather than just passive skills like in the books. But also it’s important to still keep the mood and the original feel of Cyberpunk – we don’t want to just create a science-fiction game. It’s easy to do that. We still want to balance it with those main features and the mood from the Cyberpunk original. This is a huge task, I think.

Creative director Sebastian Stepien geeft aan dat CD Projekt RED de term “cyberpunk” niet alleen zal toepassen op het uiterlijk, maar ook op de gameplay. Ze willen de filosofie achter de term blootleggen. Hij vergelijkt het met de aanpak van filmregisseur Tarantino:

This is very, very important. The style and mood and atmosphere of this world, what you do at the bar, what do you drink, how you react with other people, what dialogue you choose – all these things let us keep the Cyberpunk atmosphere all the time. There are lots of cyber games around, but there’s not a lot of punk in those games. We want to put more punk into ours. We do not want to make a dark and hopeless world. We are not doing Blade Runner. It will be full of rock and roll. It’s more like a Tarantino approach.

Cyberpunk 2077 zal volgend jaar in de winkels liggen.
