Welk einde jij als speler te zien krijgt in Final Fantasy XIII-2, hangt volledig af van de door jou gemaakte keuzes. Een dergelijke invloed op het verhaal hoeven we in Lightning Returns echter niet te verwachten, zo liet regisseur Motomu Toriyama weten.
In een interview verklaarde Toriyama waarom Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII slechts één einde bevat:
The concept behind the design of Lighting Returns is that it will be the concluding chapter of the Lightning Saga. Unlike in the previous title, there will not be multiple possible endings created from differently branching interpretations of history, but instead the story will lead to the one true ending.Dat neemt niet weg dat je een compleet andere ervaring voorgeschoteld kan krijgen wanneer je de game voor een tweede keer speelt:
Having said that, the game is structured so that time is constantly ticking away during gameplay and the world moving and changing with it, meaning that every time you play through you can have a new experience.Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII staat gepland voor een release in het derde kwartaal van 2013.
