In het verleden maakten enkele grote beroemdheden hun opwachting in GTA V. Zo verzorgde Ray Liotta het stemwerk van de protagonist in GTA Vice City en Samuel L. Jackson voorzag Officer Tenpenny in San Andreas van een stem. Voor GTA V heeft Rockstar echter geen grote namen aangenomen. Studiobaas Dan Houser heeft in een interview met het tijdschrift Game Informer laten weten dat dit een bewuste keuze is geweest.
Volgens Houser is het onhandig om rekening te moeten houden met de agenda’s van beroemdheden. Bovendien zijn ze vaak veel te prijzig voor het werk dat ze afleveren:
We’ve done two or three movie shoots for this game spread out through various three week shoots. I don’t think there would be many celebrities that would be available even if we wanted to spend the money on them for the amount that we’ve used them for.Echter, het stemmenwerk van beroemdheden in de GTA-games op de PlayStation 2 was volgens Houser juist zeer effectief. Het zorgde ervoor dat de simplistische personages meer tot leven kwamen:
The good thing about most famous actors is they can actually act very well or they can do their shtick really well. Sometimes it’s one, sometimes it’s the other. I think it was really useful on the PS2-era games for bringing these somewhat simplistic characters to life.Met de overstap naar de Xbox 360 en PlayStation 3 zijn beroemdheden naar Housers mening overbodig geworden. De beste man vermoedt dat celebrities enkel de aandacht van spelers zullen afleiden:
When we went to PS3 and 360 I think it would become a distraction if you were like, ‘Well, that’s a famous person.’ Suddenly these characters start to feel like they were alive a lot more and you need that to sell them. As long as you have good actors, not knowing them actually is an advantage in terms of bringing the game to life.
