De afgelopen jaren was het een zekerheid dat iedere Call of Duty-game beter zou gaan verkopen dan de voorganger. Ditmaal zijn de analisten verdeeld over de mogelijkheid voor een nieuw verkooprecord voor Call of Duty: Black Ops II.
Volgens een analist bij EEDAR, Jesse Divnich, is het ieder jaar weer de vraag of een nieuwe Call of Duty de verkooprecords weer kan verkopen en ieder jaar doet de franchise dit weer. Daarom gaat hij er vanuit dat de blockbuster van Activision het ook dit jaar goed zal doen:
The entire HD market is very soft at the moment, and it is understandable that retailers, publishers, and analysts are likely to be conservative on any Black Ops II forecast. Every year we question whether the Call of Duty franchises can set new records, and for the last four years they have proven us wrong. Personally, I wouldn’t under-estimate Activision, even against the odds of a more torpid HD market this holiday season.Billy Pidgeon van M2 Research is het met Divnich eens. Doordat er ieder jaar weer meer consoles zijn, vindt hij het logisch dat Black Ops II ook nu weer meer zal verkopen. Er is immers weer een grotere afzetmarkt:
Call of Duty should continue to do very well and is likely to continue to break records as it will sell into a larger installed base of consoles.Michael Pachter van Wedbush Securities is het daar niet mee eens. Hij denkt dat Modern Warfare 3 niet meer zal verkopen dan zijn voorganger Black Ops, wat voor hem een teken is dat de rek uit de Call of Duty-franchise is. De verkoop rond Black Ops II zal zich nu dus stabiliseren:
I don’t think Modern Warfare 3 is going to sell more than the last Black Ops, so I doubt that this one will break a record. I think that Call of Duty is a phenomenon, selling way more than 20 million units annually, and it’s unrealistic to think that number can grow meaningfully with each annual release.Ook een analist bij RW Baird, Colin Sebastian, denkt niet dat Black Ops II wederom record na record zal breken. Sebastian vindt dat het tijd is voor nieuwe consoles, zodat men gebruik kan maken van veel krachtigere apparatuur. Tot die tijd denkt ook hij dat de verkoopcijfers van Call of Duty niet zullen stijgen. Hij voorspelt dan ook dat Black Ops II qua verkoop gelijk zal zijn met de voorgaande games:
Overall, I think games like Call of Duty need new console hardware – developers are working with 7-year-old technology in an environment when tablets and smart TVs will soon be just as powerful. We are forecasting Black Ops 2 to sell roughly the same number of copies as Modern Warfare 2 in 2011 [22 miljoen exemplaren wereldwijd].
