Het is niet makkelijk om een slechterik te spelen in de nieuwe Batman-film, The Dark Knight Rises. Je moet immers in de schaduw staan van Heath Ledger, die in het vorige deel een geniale vertolking bracht van The Joker. Zijn dood heeft hem daarnaast spreekwoordelijk onsterfelijk gemaakt en Tom Hardy, één van de nieuwe supervillains, wil dan ook graag benadrukken dat Bane absoluut geen Joker is. Sterker nog Bane is volgens hem een veel gevallen precies het tegenovergestelde:
“The Joker didn’t care—he just wanted to see the world burn, and he was a master of chaos and destruction, unscrupulous and crazy. Bane is not that guy. There is a very meticulous and calculated way about Bane. There is a huge orchestration of organization to his ambition. He is also a physical threat to Batman. There is nothing vague about Bane. No jokes. He’s a very clean, clear villain.”Er is al kritiek gekomen op Bane, vooral vanwege zijn stem, die moeilijk te horen achter zijn masker. Hoewel Hardy denkt dat het publiek zijn karakter wel zal begrijpen, begrijpt hij ook de risico’s van Bane:
“There were two doors we could walk through. We could play a very straightforward villain or we could go through this very quirky door, which is totally justified by the text but may seem very, very stupid. … It’s a risk, because we could be laughed at—or it could be very fresh and exciting.”The Dark Knight Rises is vanaf 25 juli te zien in de Nederlandse bioscopen.
