De 300 spin-off, voorheen Xerxes genoemd, is door de makers hernoemd naar 300: Battle of Artemisia. En aangezien Zak Snyder dit project aan de kant heeft geschoven voor Man of Steel, wordt er nog steeds gezocht naar een nieuwe regisseur. Men heeft er twee op het oog: Noam Murro (Smart People, reclamefilmpjes voor het videospel Halo) en Jaume Collet-Serra (Unknown).
Net als 300 zal deze film gebaseerd zijn op een stripboek van Frank Miller en de spin-off zal ook in dezelfde stijl gefilmd worden als zijn voorganger. Verder wordt 300: Battle of Artemisia een prequel. Het verhaal gaat als volgt:
Miller’s graphic novel told the story of how Xerxes became this peculiar god-like entity. That mythology goes back to the death of his father, Darius, from injuries sustained at the Battle of Marathon in 490 B.C. Darius had told his son not to attack the Greeks because they can only be punished by a god, and so Xerxes tried to transform himself into a deity to gain revenge.
