Ninja Gaiden III mag dan nummer drie in de titel hebben, maar laat dat je niet voor de gek houden. Volgens Team Ninja zal Ninja Gaiden III geen sequel, maar meer een reboot van de gehele franchise zijn. Yosuke Hayashi, leider bij Team Ninja, vertelde het volgende:
We’re developing it with the idea of restarting at the beginning, saying ‘We’d like to make the action game that’s most interesting for the current era. With this meaning, it’s going to be a game that’s not bound by the past more than necessary. Of course, we will be valuing the past, but in a good meaning we’d like to make it into a game that’s not tied down by the past.De eerdere Ninja Gaiden-games worden dus zeker in de gaten gehouden, maar vernieuwing is zeker welkom. Wel is op te merken dat Hayashi alleen vage hints gaf waar Ninja Gaiden III over zal gaan.

De ontwikkelaar zal echter nog even wachten met het vrijgeven van nieuwe informatie.
