Ondanks dat Mr. Metal Gear himself, Hideo Kojima, heeft aangegeven te stoppen met de serie na het onlangs verschenen Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, lijkt het er sterk op dat de Metal Gear-serie zeker niet zal ophouden na dit vierde deel. Ryan Payton, producent van het spel, heeft zich namelijk knap uit vorige statements van Kojima geluld.
- “There are some misunderstandings that this is the final Metal Gear game. But it’s really the final chapter of the Solid Snake story. That’s all.”
Het gegeven dat Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots het slot is in de Solid Snake-serie, is namelijk ook zo op te vatten dat Metal Gear Solid 5 een prequel op de serie zou kunnen zijn, of zich tussen eerdere delen afspelen. Dit heeft Payton laten doorschemeren in een interview met de Amerikaanse website 1UP. Daarnaast hint hij ook naar het feit dat een ander personage het stokje kan overnemen in de spelserie.
- “I’m happy we could wrap up Snake’s story in MGS4. If we continue on with Metal Gear Solid 5 with more Solid Snake adventures, we’ll get to the point where the game has absolutely no basis in reality.. He’s had four or five really big missions, and that seems a little more realistic to me.”
