Naast Emmy’s voor allerlei televisiegebeurens wordt er elk jaar ook een Emmy uitgereikt voor “Outstanding Achievement in Technology and Advanced New Media”. Dit jaar is de eer gevallen aan Sony.
Sony heeft deze prijs gewonnen voor het pionierswerk dat zij verricht heeft op het gebied van 3D polygon-based gamen, in een tijd waarin 2D-gaming eigenlijk het enige was. Ken Kutaragi, hoofd van Sony, vat het werk als volgt samen:
- “When the concept for PlayStation was in its infancy in the early 1990s, we had a dream to elevate the quality of computer graphics from a 2D-based environment to a rich, realistic 3D experience. At the same time, we intended to bring in a new form of entertainment through the living room in a manner that would allow people all over the world to enjoy the pleasures of interactive entertainment”
Nu, zo’n 10 jaar later, is vrijwel alles 3D. Zal Sony met een volgende stap komen?
